Against The Day
“Against the Day” delivers anew an essay on images and how they function in the spreading of messages, whether it is about the code of the Jesuit order or the reclaiming of fantasy by Disney. Tuymans’ series, in the way it encircles the problematical and brings to the surface that which lies just below – the forgotten or underlying aspects – has the character of a modern sort of ‘history painting’, capturing in an image the impact and scope of important historical changes. In this series Tuymans deals with the most immediate horizon on which images and our perceptions thereof are situated, those of the perfect simulations on luminous screens.
